Eula Mae Lawhon Taylor was born at home in Elgin, Texas to Obra A. Lawhon and Grady Hibbs Lawhon on September 23, 1933. She departed this earth, at the age of 90, peacefully on January 29th, 2024, surrounded by her family.
“Sugars”, her parent’s nickname for her, attended Elgin schools. She met and married Jack Taylor of McDade, Texas. Together they raised their three daughters while living on the Prewitt Brickyard, now Acme Brick Company. She and Jack lived on the brickyard along with many other families until times changed and the “brickyard community” slowly dissolved and housing was no longer available. The community was a tight knit group where their kids could roam and play and make lifelong friends, while their fathers worked at the plant making and selling brick. Eula Mae was a homemaker who had a spotless house, who made the clothes her children wore when they were young and was a doting grandmother, whom her grandchildren called “Granny.”
She also liked to crochet and made each of her grandchildren an afghan. Her nieces and nephews called their favorite aunt, “Aunt Shug” and loved being around her. She was a member of the Elgin Church of Christ, where her daughters also attended in their youth, for many years.
These past few years have not been easy. She was a resident of Elgin Nursing Home where her daughters attended to her every need and befriended many of the other residents. A family birthday party for her was held every year at the center where she was able to visit with extended family. Eula Mae was happy and content - never once complaining about her circumstances or her health. She always greeted everyone with a smile.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, sister, Rose Scott and grandson, Quinton White.
She is survived by her brother, Wilton Lawhon and sisters, Betty Pruitt and Janet Dixon. She is also survived by her daughters, Charlotte Rickard and husband, Miles, Rebecca Martin and husband, Sid, Debbie Ramirez and husband, David and grandchildren: Meredith, Taylor, Kyle, Crystal, Justin, Brittany, Erica, and Sarah and 17 great-grandchildren.
A special and heartfelt thank you to her niece, Lana Smith Reed, who faithfully and lovingly visited and checked on her these past few years.
