Evelyn Wolf, of McDade, Texas, passed away peacefully on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at the age of 84.
The eldest of eleven children, Evelyn Frances Farris was born in the community of Oak Hill near McDade, Texas, on October 23, 1940, to Hubert Farris Sr. and Minnie Lee Emerson Farris. She was a 1959 graduate of Elgin High School, and met her future husband, Dan Wolf, while working on his family’s farm in McDade. They married January 28, 1961, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Elgin, and were blessed with four children: Danna Rother (Scott), Monica Buie (Allen), William Wolf (Darla), and Julie Smith (Jason). Together, Evelyn and Dan farmed peaches, pears, and blackberries for many years on Wolf Farm.
Evelyn devoted her life to caring for others. She was a wonderful, loving, and dedicated mother to her children and grandchildren, and cared selflessly for her parents and in-laws in their later years. Deeply rooted in her community, Evelyn was an organizing and life-long member of Faith Lutheran Church in McDade. She was a 4-H leader for countless years and began the annual McDade Rabies Vaccination Clinic (which still takes place each spring) as a community project for the club. She was also instrumental in bringing local calling (no long distance) between McDade and neighboring towns – an endeavor for which she was honored with the Community Builder Award by the Elgin Masonic Lodge. She had a passion for family history, and as a self-taught genealogist she was always happy to assist others researching their ancestors. As an active member and registrar of the Baron de Bastrop Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, she was instrumental in helping fellow members complete their membership applications. Given her love of genealogy, it’s not surprising that she was also a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. In addition to her many accomplishments, she found joy in simple pleasures. She was known for being a champion Skip-Bo card player and her infamous blackberry jelly and dressing made every family gathering special.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her in-laws, Martin and Martha Wolf; her sisters, Inez Haverland and Lois Pace; and her brothers, Robert Farris, Fred Farris, Jim Allen Farris, and John Wayne Farris (whom she helped raise and was especially fond of). She was also preceded by her beloved aunt, Lucille Sutherland (who always brought joy to her and her siblings by thoughtfully providing treats and always remembering them with gifts for their birthdays and Christmas), as well as several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-laws, and other cherished relatives.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, along with nine grandchildren who knew her as “Omie”: Dr. JD Buie (Shreya), Zachary Rother (Rachael), Megan Lewis (James), Peyton Buie, Reagan Morgan (Evan), Cody Wolf, Zander Smith, Will Wolf, Walker Smith, and three great-grandchildren: Wade Lewis, Lane Rother, and Morgan Rother. She is also survived by her siblings: devoted brother, Hubert Farris, Jr. (Lilly), sister, Linda Saunders (Glenn), and brothers, Curtis Farris and Douglas Farris; uncles Clyde Farris and Richard Emerson (who adored her and was very special to her); aunt, Juanita Rice; and many other extended family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Faith Lutheran Church McDade Food Pantry or the charity of your choice in Evelyn’s memory.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Argent Court Assisted Living and Silver Pines Nursing Home in Bastrop. Evelyn was blessed with communities that loved, cared for, and made her feel safe. Her smiles and blown kisses to the staff were a testament to her happiness there, and her family is forever grateful for them. In her final years, Evelyn had the privilege to share a room with “Ms. Pat” Sechrist who became a dear friend and treasured companion. Ms. Pat was a blessing beyond measure whose presence gave not only Evelyn comfort and peace, but her family too.
Rest peacefully, Mom/Omie. We take comfort in knowing that you are embraced by those who have gone before you, and in the promise of our own salvation that we will see you again.
Well done, good and faithful servant. Be a good girl, we know you always are.
