Helen Anna Mueller McCord, 95, of Bastrop passed away on February 20, 2026. She was born December 6, 1930 to Gerhard and Frieda (Staehr) Mueller, in Dreyer, TX. She graduated from Yoakum High School in 1948 and received her Registered Nurse’s degree in 1952 from Brackenridge School of Nursing in Austin, TX.
She is preceded in death by her parents Gerhard and Frieda Mueller, her brother Henry Mueller, and her husband of 62 years Norris McCord.
Helen met Norris while working in the emergency room at Brackenridge Hospital, and he was a police officer with the Austin Police Dept. They were married in September 1952 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Yoakum. They resided in Austin and had 2 sons Greg and Clay, and a daughter Terry. They were members of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Austin until 1971 when they moved to Bastrop.
Over the years, Helen worked as a nurse for Dr. James Graham, MD (deceased) in Austin, Bastrop Memorial Hospital, St. Edward's University Health Center in Austin and later as a secretary for the Learning Center until her retirement in 1988.
When she wasn’t working, cleaning or cooking, Helen enjoyed relaxing with a good cup of coffee and a western book. She loved music and played the piano and organ from a young age. She also liked her flower garden and even ventured into the plant and flower business for a time. Most of all, Helen enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Relationships held the high ground in her life, especially the company of her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Helen was a devout christian and a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Bastrop. For the last few years, she coped with the challenges of declining health by drawing strength from those family visits and from her undying faith in the God of grace and new life. Family and friends are grateful for the life and times they shared with her and she will be deeply missed.
Helen is survived by her brother Wilbert ‘Bert’ Mueller (Sue) of Oregon; daughter, Terry Carter; son Greg McCord (Donna); son Clayton McCord (Pat); grandchildren Caleb McCord; Alexis Fischer (Martin); Luke Barron; Erin Beckermann (Darin); and Josh McCord (Rachel); four great-grandchildren Zoe & Liam Fischer and Henry & Cam Beckermann and numerous nieces and nephews.
