Troy V. Watson

July 1, 1944 — July 10, 2025

Elgin

Troy Vaughan Watson, age 81, of Elgin, Texas, passed away peacefully on July 10th surrounded by his family.

Troy was born on July 1, 1944, to Vernon and Lula Mae Womack Watson in Oatmeal, Texas. He graduated from Bertram High School in 1962, where he was an all around athlete, FFA Beau, football captain, and voted class favorite. He then went on to proudly serve in the U.S. Air Force from 1962-1966.

On November 25, 1967, Troy married Jeanette Patrick of Elgin, Texas, at St. Peter’s Church of Coupland. Together they shared 57 wonderful years of marriage, a union founded in love, faith, and a dedication to family and the Elgin community. Friends and family remember their marriage as an example of devotion, and they spent a significant amount of their time in the bleachers of countless Elgin Wildcat athletic events.

Throughout his life, Troy worked as a carpenter in construction and took pride in the many buildings he helped shape across Austin. He later retired from Elgin ISD in 2005 where he served as the Director of Maintenance. Troy’s dedication to Elgin went beyond his profession, as witnessed in his various volunteer positions. He served on the Elgin School Board for six years, contributed to Elgin Little League as both the President and coach of various teams, as well as was an active member of the Wildcat Booster Club for many years.

Troy was known far and wide for his kindness, easy smile, and his uncanny ability to make anyone feel like a friend. He never met a stranger, and his generosity and good humor left a lasting mark on all that knew him. A true pillar of the Elgin community, Troy gave freely of his time and energy, and his legacy will continue to live on for generations to come. He loved following Elgin Wildcat athletics, watching all Texas Longhorn Sports, and was a fan of the Houston Astros. In his later years, Troy spent his time following his children and grandchildren’s pursuits. Whether sitting in the stands, watching games online, or gathered together at home, he was happiest when surrounded by his family.

Troy is survived by his wife, Jeanette Patrick Watson; his children: Patrick Watson (wife Melinda Harkins Watson), Chad Watson (wife Brandi Beckham Watson), and Crissye Watson Johns (husband Shorty Johns); and his grandchildren: Ben Watson (wife Kyndall Wise Watson), Staci Johns Howell (husband David Howell), Blake Watson (wife Julia Dezendorf Watson), Jayme Johns (fiancé Luke Ely), Zack Watson, Cade Watson, and Cayli Johns. He also is survived by his great-grandson, Wells Patrick Watson, as well as a second great-grandchild due in February, and his brothers: Alton Watson (wife Shirley Watson), Wilton Watson, and Gene Watson (wife Cynthia Watson). Troy is also survived by his brother-in-law Ronnie Patrick (wife Cindy Patrick), and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Troy is preceded in death by his parents, his sister-in-law, Colleen Watson, and his nephew, Gary Watson.

Pallbearers will be Ben Watson, Blake Watson, Zack Watson, Cade Watson, David Howell, and Luke Ely.
